In particular we are seeking individuals with a background in cancer biology.

The successful candidate will have a background that includes hands on laboratory research as well as the generation and interpretation of genome-wide data. Research done in this position is inherently interdisciplinary and will involve mining data across organ systems and species to develop models of biology and prospectively test the utility of those models. These models will be used to focus mechanistic experiments in many aspects of biology, including applications in therapeutic target and biomarker discovery as well as patient stratification for clinical outcome or pharmacological response. A necessary pre-requisite for this position is hands on experience in developing network-based algorithms for representing high dimension genomic data. This position will work in a multi-discipline team and contribute significantly to our efforts to systematically study complex human diseases through the integration of genetics, genomics, gene expression, transcription factor binding arrays, RNAi, clinical end-points, protein-protein interaction, literature data, etc. The goal of the research is to identify causal relationships between pairs of traits, gene-gene or gene-clinical, and represent them in networks or probabilistic graphical models. Such causal networks will be used to elucidate disease or drug mechanism, to aid target discovery and target prioritization.

This position will develop novel methods for integrating diverse data sources, comparing different networks (such as networks for human and mouse, or liver and adipose) and identify common features among networks or distinct pathways between normal networks and disease specific networks. A successful candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to lead complex projects and to work effectively in a team environment.

Ph.D. or equivalent in physics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, electrical engineering, bioinformatics, or other relevant area.

Solid programming skills and experience with large data sets.

3+ years of experience in an academic or corporate setting developing systems approaches.

This Post-doctoral fellow will work in a multi-discipline environment and will be responsible for developing novel methods for comparing different networks (such as networks for human and mouse, or liver and adipose) and identifying common features among networks and / or distinct pathways between normal networks and disease specific networks.
Internship projects are focused in these three critical areas of: Data Analysis and Monitoring, Needs Assessment, and Program Evaluation.

Data Analysis and Monitoring. Monitoring of diseases, injuries, and health conditions for their frequency, risk factors, consequences, and health service requirements, and analysis of epidemiological data sets are some of the projects included in this area. For example, an intern in Missoula County, Montana analyzed data to examine breastfeeding initiation, duration and exclusivity rates prior to and following interventions.

Needs Assessment. Projects in this area include the systematic analysis, assessment, and projection of health needs and resources in a given population or community. In 2008, the GSIP intern with Iowa Department of Public Health took a leadership role in assessing and promoting evidence-based Title V MCH services.

Program Evaluation. This area includes the monitoring, collection, and analysis of data to determine the effectiveness or outcomes of a particular program or project. An intern working at the Alexandria Department of Health worked to evaluate an initiative to provide comprehensive health, dental, developmental, and mental health evaluations for children who are at risk of abuse or neglect, in foster care, or who are homeless.

Job Closes: February 24, 2010

Post-Graduate Fellowship

The Post-Graduate Fellowship is an intensive training program that provides opportunities both for self-directed research and interdisciplinary collaboration in health metrics. Strong candidates for this program have graduate-level training in quantitative methodology from one of the following areas: health policy, economics, mathematics, computer science, statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, health services, demography, engineering, physics, medical sciences, or other related fields.

The Post-Graduate Fellowship (PGF) combines academic research, education and training, and professional work with progressive, on-the-job training and mentoring from an illustrious group of professors and researchers.

The purpose of the fellowship is to: • Enhance skills in conducting in-depth, methodological research on a variety of global health topics with mentoring from faculty and researchers who are the leading minds in their fields. • Advance knowledge of quantitative analytical methodologies and their application to global health. • Develop understanding of the current global health landscape and its challenges. • Strengthen the ability to design and implement research projects and mentor junior researchers. • Prepare fellows for future positions in academia, national health agencies, international organizations, and foundations.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation is a new organization at the University of Washington. Its mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. It uses cutting-edge techniques to tackle some of the most difficult and critical questions in global health and find answers that will become the foundation for better policies and, ultimately, better health.

IHME fellows work in one or two of six IHME focus areas: • Generating systematic estimates of health outcomes, including mortality, causes of death, and the overall burden of disease. • Measuring the coverage of specific health interventions and estimating the quality of care. • Tracking, measuring, and analyzing donated funding for health and how it affects national government health spending. • Estimating the costs and effectiveness of health service delivery platforms and interventions. • Conducting impact evaluations of policies, interventions, and programs and assessing health system performance. • Developing survey instruments and creating analytical tools to harness the value of data from national and international health information systems and from locally available sources.

Fellows receive training through on-the-job research, methods workshops, access to University of Washington courses, and on-site lectures and seminars. Fellows contribute directly to IHME's research agenda through their involvement in work groups, development of new methods, and managing and driving research projects to meet deliverables.

Post-Graduate Fellowships are appointed at IHME for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year upon mutual agreement. The salary is $50,000. As University of Washington employees, fellows are eligible for an insurance benefits package that includes a choice among several medical and dental insurance plans, life insurance, and long-term disability.
